The time frame of the plot is set in 1995 and involves role-playing of Dungeons & Dragons in its fantasy setting, but this version (unlike the one at EHS) is definitely meant for adult audiencesīut that all suddenly changes when her family (mom, dad, and younger sister, Tilly) are all killed in an automobile accident, and she’s left behind with nothing but questions. Including a local one in 2021 - a very limited staging by Eureka High School’s drama department of one of Nguyen’s most popular (and controversial) creations: “She Kills Monsters.”Īnd now, there’s a chance for those of you in the Humboldt County theater community (who most likely missed the EHS show) to experience Cal Poly Humboldt’s current production of “She Kills Monsters.” Produced by the Department of Dance, Music and Drama in the Van Duzer Theatre, it’s an even more powerful staging of this fanciful, thought-provoking play for local audiences to contemplate.Īnd that involves a core element of the subject matter that centers around an LGBTQ character and their struggle for acceptance. ![]() ![]() So, whenever I’ve had the opportunity to see another of Nguyen’s sure-to-be intriguing plays, they’ve never disappointed me. As long as they spoke, or found, their own truth, that’s all that mattered. He took no prisoners with his over-the-top, roller coaster approach of astutely observing the highs and lows of human relationships as his characters searched for solutions to the rocky challenges life dealt them.īut, in spite of the bold, brazen ways they often chose to do so, they were still people who touched your heart with the honesty of who they were, whether the world agreed with their choices or not. Stunning.Īnd I never forgot how masterful he was in creating such a gem of a dramedy. I first encountered one of quirky playwright Qui Nguyen’s outrageous, insightful, painfully profound and ironically funny works, titled “Vietgone,” a few years ago at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
